Each marionette goes through seven stages of traditional craftsmanship, taking 12-18 days from raw wood to finished puppet. Our process has remained largely unchanged for three generations.
We choose seasoned sheesham wood pieces, checking for grain quality and absence of knots. Wood must be dry-aged for at least 6 months to prevent cracking.
The head is carved using traditional chisels and knives. Facial features are sculpted by hand - this is the most skilled part requiring 8-12 hours per head.
Torso, limbs, hands, and feet are carved separately, then connected using ball-and-socket joints for natural movement. Each joint is hand-fitted.
All wooden parts are sanded smooth in multiple stages, from coarse to fine grit. A natural wood sealer is applied before painting.
Base coat, detail work, and final touches are applied using fine brushes. Traditional mineral paints or modern acrylics depending on character style.
Fabrics are hand-cut and sewn to fit the puppet. Details like jewelry, turbans, and accessories are added. All costumes are unique.
Strings are attached to control points on head, hands, back, and knees. The control bar is balanced and tested for proper movement.
